According to the artist the title, Cow Grazing in the Flint Hills, is not very imaginative, but it is descriptive. The landscape scene is based on an area of gently rolling hills in Northeast Kansas known as the Flint Hills. The painting is a generalized depiction of this area. For this project, the cow is the landscape painting, and at the same time, is actually in the landscape painting. The artist chose Flint Hills theme because she believes it is one of the most distinctive and lovely land formations in the region - For people not familiar with the terrain of Kansas, focusing on the Flint Hills might also dispel the notion that all of Kansas is flat and monotonous. I would hope to give the viewer a sense of the beauty and peacefulness of this area by inviting them to wander among the hills while the cow feasts, said Susan McCarthy, artist.
