Title: K.C. Moospapers (Black & White & Read All Over)
Location: Shawnee Mission Park
Artist: Reida Morrison York
Sponsor: Kansas City Star

Reida York graduated from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1980. Ms. York is an accomplished painter, and also enjoys drawing.

The artist dedicates her cow to reading and literacy - specifically reading the Kansas City Star-and keeping up on current events. “I was able to do my favorite things while working on my cow…combine my love of art with my love of the written word.”

The artist used red spray paint as the base and torn newspaper to make the cow’s spots. The glasses were constructed out of large novelty sunglasses, balsa wood and newspaper. She used an old visor, painted white with gesso and then sprayed with acrylic glaze (as was the whole cow). The horns were painted white with gesso and white acrylic paint. The hooves were blackened with black acrylic. Finally, a laminated newspaper with a hole cut in it for the hoof, so that the cow could “read” the newspaper.

This cow was sold in the internet auction hosted by Amazon.com that began on October 5, 2001, immediately following the close of the live auction and ran for approximately three weeks.
