Nobody on the planet eats more butter than New Zealanders, who consume 26 pounds per person each year. In the United States, however, butter consumption is spread pretty thin - only 4 pounds per year.

Jewel is a gorgeous, sparkling, over-the-top kind of cow, bedecked in faux jewels and pearls from head to hoof. She was very labor intensive, with each piece of decoration applied by hand at one time. Although dripping with faux diamonds, pearls, gold, and other colored gemstones, Jewel is absolutely tasteful, while acting as the cover cow for the adage “Too much jewelry is never enough” and the song “Diamonds are a Cow’s Best Friend!”

“I think this is a great fundraiser—fun for all—to be enjoyed by the people of the KC area. Much has been discussed about whether this project is “real art”; I don’t know the answer to this (most likely some of the cows are real art and even fine art), but I know it’s a form of art that the entire community can enjoy by coming in contact with it while out and about—it’s art with a smile,” said Carol Rose, artist.

This cow was sold in the internet auction hosted by Amazon.com that began on October 5, 2001, immediately following the close of the live auction and ran for approximately three weeks.
