Title: Cowputer 2001
Location: Union Station
Artist: Thomas M. Edmondson
Sponsor: Worldspan, L.P.

Artist Thomas Edmondson has always been intrigued by the designs and objects found on a computer circuit board. When it was announced that the cows were coming to Kansas City, he thought it would be cool to see a cow converted into a huge circuit board. “Then I realllllllly thought “outside the cow” and added a working PC inside the cow,” said the artist.

“Cowputuer 2001” became reality on April 17, 2001 when he pushed her plug into the outlet and booted up the PC for the first time. The electrical wires were inserted in a hose connected to a real “dairy milking cup” attached to the cow’s udder and the wires go up into the cow and are attached to a surge protector. Since the PC is enclosed inside the cow, a 4” fan is attached to the milk sac at the back of the cow that brings air inside to cool the PC’s processor and monitor. The hot air is ventilated out through two vents in her hips. The attention to detail and craftsmanship that went into this cow is incredible.

“When people "experience" Cowputer2001 the “Cow-message” they should see, hear and feel is best described in that famous song, “Everything Is Up To Date In Kansas City”. Yes, Kansas City used to be a cow town but today we are on the leading edge of technology and that is why Worldspan sponsored this design out of the 500+ submitted,” the artist added.

This cow was sold in the live auction conducted by Sotheby's on October 5, 2001 at Starlight Theatre.
