The "Cowch" is a reclining cow that has been lovingly modified into a real couch. Most of the real work and structure is hidden behind the lush velvet upholstery. No corners were cut into making this very functional and comfortable decorative piece. To give the "Cowch" a sense of place, it is on a red oak base, accompanied by a milk pail lamp. The real surprise is that shortly after you are seated, it moos! If you look carefully, one of the cow's spots has a counter that displays the number of people that have sat in it since it's creation.
When the call for entries for CowParade Kansas City went out last year, I spent a few weeks brainstorming hundreds of ideas. (Most were edited out for a variety of reasons, and even more were eliminated because they had already been done in the New York and Chicago CowParades.) I decided that I needed a set of criteria that would help distill my idea. The Cow needed to be very strong in concept, visually graphic and concise, appealing to all ages, encourage interaction, and most of all make the viewers smile. I think the "Cowch" delivers on all these and more. I hope people come and have a seat, smile and get their picture taken, then walk away with a better feeling and appreciation of art and the Kansas City community, remarked Mark Cordes, artist.
