Cow Parade Kansas City2000

Cows drink 25-50 gallons of water each day. That's nearly a bathtub full.

Title: Moo-la, Moo-la
Location: JCCC, Overland Park, KS
Artist: Lara René Frashier
Sponsor: Accenture

"Moo-la, Moo-la" is completely covered with pennies, mostly brand new 2001 pennies. They were glued to the surface with adhesive caulking and then grouted to secure them permanently. On a few locations, tarnished pennies were used for shading purposes. The head of the cow has pennies heads-up and the tail of the cow has tails-up. There are three blank pennies hidden on the "Moo-la, Moo-la." The creation of the cow took place in Valley View Bank’s Lobby. The bank contributed the 14,249 pennies it took to cover "Moo-la, Moo-la."

“I was inspired by the reflective quality and color of pennies. Imagining sunlight hitting that many shiny surfaces placed closely together was very exciting!! Past work in mosaics assisted with construction of my penny mosaic design. By creating "Moo-la, Moo-la" in a public arena, I hope I have encouraged and inspired children who have never seen a professional artist at work. And the hundreds of smiles (children and adult) this cow inspired during her creation helped to heal the world a little. May she inspire thousands more,” said artist Lara Frashier.

This cow was sold in the live auction conducted by Sotheby's on October 5, 2001 at Starlight Theatre.
