Title: Environmental Cow
Location: Starlight Theatre/Swope Park/KC Zoo
Artist: Patricia Roney
Sponsor: Kansas City Parks & Recreation

“Environmental Cow” has a large creek running around her body with trees, flowers and many types of forest vegetation. On the many rocks are turtles, frogs and lizards taking in the sun. Butterflies and moths are flying or landing on the vines climbing toward the warmth of the sunlight on the cow’s back. “I made some things close and others at a distance to make it more interesting,” said artist Patricia Roney.

“Most of my childhood was spent in Kansas City, Missouri. Although the neighborhood had many houses, the woods were not far away. We spent many a summer day following the creek looking for ring neck snakes while overturning the rocks and admiring the flowers that grew along the water’s edge. I hope my version of the wooded areas remind everyone of the beauty that we pass every day and miss seeing all the creatures that depend on us. My wish is that we don’t over-develop the land for our children’s enjoyment.”

This cow was sold in the live auction conducted by Sotheby's on October 5, 2001 at Starlight Theatre.
