The Maasai tribe in East Africa is a proud people who believe they to be the owners of all cattle. It is their birthright and calling. They are known to be feared warriors, and at the same time gentle lovers of their children and their cattle. This Maasai Africow wears the robes and beadwork jewelry demonstrating her proud ancestral heritage. Only the girls and women wear this style of beaded necklace. Thus, or Africow wears her beads proudly.
Just as the Maasai do, she is wrapped in a bright red and blue plaid garment. When she participates in the eunoto ceremony (which only occurs once every 15 years), our Africow sings and dances to celebrate tribal rites of passage!
Artist Cathleen Henson Cackler-Veazey has served as the president of the Independence (Missouri) Art Association and has had art shows in various public and private institutions over the years.
