Title: Strawberry Ice Cream
Location: Northland Fountain Park-Vivion & N. Oak Trafficway
Artist: Roger Garner
Sponsor: KMBC - TV 9

"Strawberry Ice Cream" is a painting of a giant ice cream cone hovering high above a field on the Kansas prairie. It was painted entirely with outdoor enamel paint. According to Roger Garner, the artist, “Strawberry Ice Cream is my favorite ice cream—there is none better. And, I love Kansas. It’s so flat, so surreal and so hot! A friend from Africa once told me that the summers in Kansas are hotter than in Nigeria. I believe him! No ice cream is safe in this part of the country. My biggest inspiration for this painting came one Kansas summer day. While shooting video without an assistant and trying to deal with unbearable heat, I saw another friend eating my favorite ice cream piled high on a waffle cone! I could only stand there drooling, as the melting ice cream dripped everywhere. I’ll never forget that day. It was really hot! I was all sweaty, my knees wobbled. I couldn’t breathe! I thought I was going to have a heart attack! Unfortunately, on that day my video couldn’t be used either. When it’s that hot, it’s really hard on the equipment too. I love ice cream.”
