The Cow of Kells is not just a piece of art. She is a history lesson as well. The Book of Kells, with 345 surviving leaves made of high-quality calf-skin, from 185 animals, drawn from inks in ink-pots made of cows’ horns, is the crowning accomplishment of Irish illuminators – the supreme achievement of Celtic art. Although depicted somewhat in the book, cows never really got their due. Now 1,100 years later, it’s payback time. Celtic kitsch at its finest deserves a cow – the home of probably the world’s finest illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells. As a newly arrived Irishman living in Kansas City, Irish-born artist Liam Daly has a respect for the history of the Irish and of the Cow in Kansas City, and attempts the perfect marriage of both cultures in the Cow of Kells.
